Introduction

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) advises registered owners and operators of Cessna Aircraft Company Model 680 and 750 airplanes of an airworthiness concern regarding a discrepancy in the nose landing gear extension mechanism.

Background

Cessna Aircraft Company Model 680 and 750 nose landing gear doors are linked to the torque tubes with over-center linkages. These linkages are spring loaded to the outboard over-center position, but could be pushed out of position inadvertently during cleaning, maintenance, or other activities in the nose gear bay. If these linkages are not in the correct position, the nose gear may retract, but not properly extend. There is no cockpit indication if these linkages are out of position, but there would be cockpit indication if the nose gear did not properly deploy once the landing gear is selected down. At this time, the airworthiness concern is not an unsafe condition that would warrant Airworthiness Directive (AD) action under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) Part 39.

Recommendations

The FAA recommends complying with the following guidance, in addition to reviewing approved maintenance procedures for Model 680 and 750 airplanes to verify that the temporary changes and the checklists therein, as identified in the below table, have been incorporated into the applicable airplane flight manual (AFM).

• Review Cessna operational advisory titled “Nose Gear Door Preflight Inspection” – Internet www.cessnasupport.com/articles/NoseGearDoorPreflightInspection.pdf.
• Ensure that the preflight inspection in the applicable Cessna operating procedures is done.
• Ensure that the instructions in Chapter 52-80-20, Section 3.B.(5) of the Model 680 airplane maintenance manual are incorporated.
